Simple expanding brackets
WebbExpanding brackets (or multiplying out) is the process by which we remove brackets. It is the reverse process of factorisation. To expand brackets we multiply everything outside of the bracket, by everything inside of the bracket. Once we have expanded the brackets we can simplify the expression by collecting the like terms. E.g. WebbExpanding two or more sets of brackets. So far, we have only used the distributive law to expand expressions with one set of brackets, (x + 3) u = xu + 3 u. Now suppose that we want to expand an expression such as (x + 3)(x + 5) with two sets of brackets. The method is to expand one set, and then expand the other.
